Increase in Recreational Boaters in Sunny Florida
Florida is an ideal boating location with a prevalence of waterways, rivers, lakes, and a huge coastline. As a result, Florida is known to lead the nation in registered vessels with 915,713 vessels registered in just 2015. In addition, it has been estimated that one million non-registered boats actively use Florida waters and the population is growing. This means that Florida waterways are showing increased congestion each year, as boaters continue enjoying our beautiful weather and our abundant water resources
More Boaters, More Accidents
However, with this increase in boaters comes an increased number of accidents, injuries, and deaths. At the end of every year, the boating accident information is compiled and then put together in Florida’s Annual Report. According to these reports, Florida has the highest number of boating accidents yearly, many involving serious injuries and even deaths. According to the most recent report compiled by the Florida Fish and Wild Life Commission, the state agency responsible for enforcement of boating safety laws, there were 685 reported boating accidents and 79 boating related fatalities in 2015.
Clearly, many watercraft operators are unaware of how to safely navigate their vessel and how to respond to emergency situations which is a common cause of boating accidents and injuries. Boaters do not realize that the same precautions used when driving a car should also be used when driving a boat. The dangers of watercrafts should not be underestimated.
Limited Requirements in Obtaining a Boating License
Additionally, In Florida, there are limited requirements involved in getting a boating license as compared to other states. In fact, boating education is only required for those born after 1988, meaning everyone who obtained a license before 1988 has not had any formal background on boating. Almost 70 percent of the boat operators involved in a fatal boating accident in Florida were 36 or older, with a lot of boating experience, but who have failed to learn the most important safety considerations that could be obtained by taking a boating safety course. This is because you are not required to if you were born before 1988.
Importance of a Boating Safety Course
This is a surprising statistic, but emphasizes the importance of learning boating safety by enrolling in a boating safety course. We often recommend enrolling in the local boating safety courses sponsored by the United States Coast Guard. If you have a son or daughter who you are going to entrust a boat with, you should insist that they take a boating safety course. The fact that most of the boating accidents involve middle age or older males with boating experience emphasizes how important a boating safety course is, even for an experienced boater.
